Deployment Automated
Not so long ago a web / content editor might have opened their text editor make some changes and upload them using ftp, or connect directly to the server and update the file. But this does leave an audit trail and we believe that all business processes should be written down, trackable and repeatable. Also making changes to a live site might not be a great business idea if it was to go wrong.
However today with version control so readily available and straight forward to use after a little guidance. If your website is under version control from the start then you get a trackable history of who did what and when. Plus you always have a backup version of your website.
A number of version control storage / hosting provides now have the ability to add automated processes. These can be configured to automatic start after an event happen to the stored repository and can carry out a defined task and provide a record of the steps carries out.
Automating deployment
Automating deployment means that you always have audit trail along with a repeatable publishing to your hosting or testing area.
If your content is stored in a GitHub repository then GitHub Actions are a great choice, they are very effective and offer great value for money.
Depending on your choice of hosting provider you will be able to chose to deploy to testing or update the live website.
You also have the option to add extra steps for testing or anything you want to carry out each time the Action runs.
Automated Testing
Cross-browser and Cross-platform testing can be configured using Microsoft Playwright.
The scope of testing required varies across projects but once defined these tests can be written and configured to run as required.
