Serverless Functions

Serverless functions open a world of possibilities for running on-demand, server-side code without having to run a dedicated platform.

Most of the time Static Websites are deployed to hosting that does not have ability to run server based code or something a host does not supporting a particular language or version. This is where serverless Functions are a great solution as it bring the ability to run code on demand with a wide range of programming languages available. You simple write the function or tasks then deploy it. You are then able to call this function from your website page.

Functions are also a great way to automated repetitive tasks like uploading and resizing images or as a form handler plus many more tasks.

The start up cost for functions is very low and the running cost can also be super low for the services they provide. Most Serverless Functions are pay for what you use but have a free started level each month.

Serverless Functions are a great tool for building proof of concept features as well. Easy to deploy , low cost and easy to change or delete.

I guess by now you are asking yourself what does Serverless mean?

It really boils down to, its a way to interact and pay for compute services from a cloud provider. Once deployed the function can scale to the number of users required without you having to worry about the hardware options or, paying up front for extra compute services that just waits around for those really busy times your website might have a few times year.

Plus, Some services Autoscale to zero which means you only pay when your code runs. Like a user requesting something, or some other form of interaction being actioned. Its also really useful as you can deploy code in any language using containers or source-based deployment (From GitHub or any Git storage).
